In Which Kasper Appreciates Art

Master Talmid Tobias stood on the other side of an impenetrable curtain of blue sapphire outside the observatory. “Prince Kasper, are you going to let me in or not?”

“What was that all about?” Kasper rose to his feet. Though he couldn’t see the Master Talmid, he knew he was there.

Rayne stirred at his sudden movement.

“Since I was eight years old, I have done what you asked!” Kasper yelled. “I never once questioned you, and you always trusted me. Tonight, you tied me up and forced me to do something I didn’t want to do. You locked me up and denied me the ability to make a choice. I couldn’t even look off the balcony to see people leaving. I’m already a prisoner here.”

“It was not my intent to lock you up. I intended to lock Barbaros out. Something happened,” Tobias began.

“First, Barbaros and his cronies can’t get up here. His magic can’t even get close. Second, it wasn’t him. It was that one girl, the artist. She threw something in the fire before she danced with Mortimer.”

“Adelia Breshien? I’m familiar with her magic and what happened was definitely not her,” Tobias said, shaking off the notion.

“I can prove it.” Kasper was about to take a step forward when someone grabbed his hand. He looked down and found Rayne rising to join him. Mortimer, too, stood to go with them.

“Wait,” Tobias said. “Before we go, I need to explain something to you.”

Kasper shrugged. “I’m listening.”

“Not out here. May I come in?”

Kasper looked at the solid sapphire blue curtain covering the door that prevented Tobias from entering.

“Knock it off. Let him in,” Mortimer encouraged him.

With a huff and good deal of concentration, Kasper called his sapphire magic from the door. Tobias stepped into the observatory and closed the door behind him. Kasper was not surprised to see him completely covered in his glowing ember grains.

“The palace is less safe now than it has ever been,” Tobias explained. “Master Talmid Wendell, Immer, and I did all that we could, but it was three against who knows how many, and our focus was on your family. Any place the guests went tonight is practically screaming with Barbaros’ magic. I think it’s looking for something.” He looked at his apprentice. “I know your instinct is to protect yourself, Rayne, and Mortimer, but you cannot use any form of magic to do so. Not anymore. You must learn a lesson of restraint for the time being. You’ve done a fantastic job up to this point, but his position outside of these four walls has grown too strong. Standing in open opposition to him will put you in his crosshairs, and Magic tells me it’s not time just yet.”

“You can’t ask me to do nothing,” Kasper said.

“I’m asking you to use extreme caution. There is too much of his magic in some of these walls. I will do all I can, but now that his foothold is this strong, the tide cannot be turned back.
